As the world of skincare continues to evolve there will always be trends and innovations that promise glowing, healthy skin. Let’s delve into some of them and explore why customization is key to achieving optimal results.
- Double Cleansing: This technique involves using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one to thoroughly remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities. Double cleansing is great because of it’s effectiveness in achieving a clean canvas for skincare products. However, not all skin needs or likes two cleanses. Your skin may find this method drying or lead to skin irritation. Then there is also the potential of just not wanting to spend the time cleansing twice. Double cleansing is not a must, remember it’s just an option.
- Retinol Alternatives: With concerns about retinol’s potential side effects, such as sensitivity and dryness, many people turn to gentler alternatives like bakuchiol and granactive retinoids. While these alternatives offer the same benefits of collagen stimulation and wrinkle reduction, they are not as powerful as traditional retinol. It may take longer to see the results.
- CBD Skincare: Cannabidiol (CBD) has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a sought-after ingredient in skincare products. However, its efficacy varies depending on the formulation and concentration, and some people may not experience significant improvements in their skin conditions.
- K-Beauty: Korean skincare techniques and products continued to influence the global market with their emphasis on hydration, gentle exfoliation, and layering of lightweight products. While many praise K-beauty for its focus on skin health, some individuals with oily or acne-prone skin struggle to find suitable products within this trend. Plus a 7 step skincare routine can feel overwhelming.
- Slugging: This is the practice of applying a thick layer of occlusive product, such as petroleum jelly or a heavy moisturizer, as the final step in your nighttime routine to lock in moisture. This technique gained popularity in 2023 for its ability to create a barrier that prevents water loss, leading to hydrated and plump-looking skin. While slugging can be beneficial for individuals with dry or dehydrated skin, it may not be suitable for everyone. Those with oily or acne-prone skin may find that slugging exacerbates their concerns by clogging pores and causing breakouts. Additionally, some people may feel uncomfortable with the heavy, greasy feeling that comes with slugging, especially in warmer climates or during humid seasons.
- Sustainable Skincare: As environmental awareness grows, so does the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly skincare options. Brands focus on recyclable packaging, cruelty-free ingredients, and reduced carbon footprints. While this trend aligns with ethical values, efficacy can vary, and not all sustainable products may address specific skin concerns effectively.
Now, let’s address why it’s okay that these trending skincare routines and products won’t work for everyone
Our skin is incredibly diverse, ranging from oily and acne-prone to dry and sensitive, and everything in between. What suits one person’s skin perfectly may cause adverse reactions in another.
I retail skincare products from wonderful and trusted brands, but I wouldn’t sell these to a client without understanding their skin type and concerns first.
The key lies in understanding your skin type, concerns, and preferences. I emphasize and advocate skin consultations to provide personalized recommendations tailored to your unique needs. Additionally, patch-testing new products as a way to identify any potential sensitivities or allergies. Introducing new products gradually into your routine can allow you to pinpoint what works or doesn’t work for you with individual skincare products.
Acknowledging that there is no one-size-fits-all solution in skincare means we can celebrate our skin’s individuality and find what works best for us. Whether it’s following a trending routine or sticking to time-tested basics. Remember, healthy skin is beautiful skin, and the journey to achieving it is as unique as you are.
